CALL TO CONFESSION (Psalm 86:15)

But you, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

God of grace, love, and communion, we confess that we have failed to love you with our whole heart, soul, and mind; and to love our neighbor as ourselves.  We ignore your commandments, stray from your way, and follow other gods.  Have mercy on us.  Forgive our sin and raise us to new life that we may serve you faithfully and give honor to your holy name.  Amen.

ASSURANCE (1 Peter 2:24)

He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that, free from sins, we might live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed.

GLORIA PATRI

Glory be to the Father,

and to the Son,

And to the Holy Ghost;

As it was in the beginning,

is now, and ever shall be:World without end. Amen. Amen.

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION (Isaiah 55:9)

For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.  Amen.

OLD TESTAMENT READING (Psalm 47:5-7)

God has gone up with a shout, the Lord with the sound of a trumpet.  Sing praises to God, sing praises; sing praises to our King, sing praises.  For God is the king of all the earth; sing praises with a psalm.

NEW TESTAMENT READING (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18)

But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, about those who have died, so that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope.  For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have died.  For this we declare to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will by no means precede those who have died.  For the Lord himself, with a cry of command, with the archangel’s call and with the sound of God’s trumpet, will descend from heaven, and the dead in Christ will rise first.  Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up in the clouds together with them to meet the Lord in the air; and so we will be with the Lord forever.  Therefore encourage one another with these words.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND LORD’S PRAYER

Loving God, thank you that you have scattered the power of death in the rising of Jesus Christ.  Thank you that you will come again to set all things right, and as you rose from the dead, so we will rise from the dead through your power.  May we look forward with hope.

As the infinite God who cares for each of us, we ask that you would be near those isolated by sickness or sorrow, and victims of violence or warfare.  May they feel your presence and love.  As we continue to emerge from the coronavirus, and deal with unrest and racial issues, please give our leaders a clear picture of your love and compassion for all.  We ask that they may be empowered to act as your agents, and we may follow.

We pray all this in the name of the Son and Savior, Jesus Christ, who taught us when we pray to say: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name.  Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.  And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever.  Amen.
