CONFESSION

Marie Hix

CALL TO CONFESSION (Isaiah 43:25)

I am He who blots out your transgressions for my own sake, and I will not remember your sins.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

We confess, O Creator of all good seed, that we are not always fruitful recipients of your abundant blessings. We crowd out your message with other concerns. We are hardened to your Word and Spirit by our cynicism and indifference. We are content with a mediocre return on your investment. Forgive, Lord, our misplaced allegiance and our willingness to settle for less than we could be. Kill the weeds in our lives and increase your harvest a hundred-fold…(moments of silence)

ASSURANCE (Daniel 9:19)

O Lord, hear; O Lord, forgive; O Lord, listen and act and do not delay!

OLD TESTAMENT READING (Jonah 1:1-4, 15-17)

Marie Hix

Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah son of Amittai, saying, “Go at once to Nineveh, that great city, and cry out against it; for their wickedness has come up before me.”  But Jonah set out to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord.  He went down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid his fare and went on board, to go with them to Tarshish, away from the presence of the Lord.  But the Lord hurled a great wind upon the sea, and such a mighty storm came upon the sea that the ship threatened to break up. . . . So they picked Jonah up and threw him into the sea; and the sea ceased from its raging.  Then the men feared the Lord even more, and they offered a sacrifice to the Lord and made vows.  But the Lord provided a large fish to swallow up Jonah; and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

NEW TESTAMENT READING (Matthew 12:38-40)

Rev. Dr. Jonathan T. Swanson, Pastor

Then some of the scribes and Pharisees said to him, “Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you.”  But he answered them, “An evil and adulterous generation asks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.  For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the sea monster, so for three days and three nights the Son of Man will be in the heart of the earth.
