CONFESSION

Jeri Ross

CALL TO CONFESSION (Isaiah 55:7)

Let the wicked forsake their way, and the unrighteous their thoughts; let them return to the LORD, that he may have mercy on them, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Sometimes, Lord, we have been over-zealous in our pursuit of purity and truth. We have placed law over love. We have considered harshness to be a virtue and patience to be a fault. We have been quick to condemn and slow to forgive. We have enjoyed the satisfaction of seeing the mighty fall. When uncovering evil, we have been delighted instead of
grieved. Remove from us, Lord, any taint of self-righteousness, and give us the loving concern which seeks the healing of your people and the unity of your church…(moments of silence)

ASSURANCE (Micah 7:19)

God will again have compassion upon us; he will tread our iniquities under foot. He will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea.

OLD TESTAMENT READING (Jonah 3:1-5, 10)

Jeri Ross

The word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time, saying, “Get up, go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to it the message that I tell you.”  So Jonah set out and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly large city, a three days’ walk across.  Jonah began to go into the city, going a day’s walk.  And he cried out, “Forty days more, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!”  And the people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast, and everyone, great and small, put on sackcloth. . . . When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil ways, God changed his mind about the calamity that he had said he would bring upon them; and he did not do it.

NEW TESTAMENT READING (Galatians 3:27-28)

Rev. Dr. Jonathan T. Swanson, Pastor

As many of you as were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.  There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND LORD’S PRAYER

Rev. Dr. Jonathan T. Swanson, Pastor

We thank you gracious God for your love revealed in Jesus Christ that encompasses all people.  Especially we thank you for the diversity of your children.  Help us to enjoy the differences and to realize our common call as the one church of Jesus Christ.

We remember in prayer those who are far away and those who are near.  We pray for neighbors in special need.  We ask that you may heal our land from its ills, such as the impact of coronavirus on the community, the problems we often overlook, and racial disharmony.  Help us all to be your blessed peacemakers, embracing everyone in your bonds of wondrous love.  We pray all this through Christ our Lord, who taught his disciples when they pray to say together: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name.  Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.  And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever.  Amen.
